In a city of the dead, long since ruined and far from human civilization, lives a single human child. His name is Will, and he's being raised by three undead the hearty skeletal warrior, Blood; the graceful mummified priestess, Mary; and the crotchety spectral sorcerer, Gus. The three pour love into the boy, and teach him all they know. But one day, Will starts to wonder "Who am I?"
Will must unravel the mysteries of this faraway dead man's land, and unearth the secret pasts of the undead. He must learn the love and mercy of the good gods, and the bigotry and madness of the bad. And when he knows it all, the boy will take his first step on the path to becoming a Paladin.

"I promised you. It's gonna take a while, but I'll tell you everything. This is the story of the deaths of many heroes. It's the story of how we died, and it's the reason you grew up here."

Review from Animenewsnetwork "Fans of fantasy by not necessarily light novels should give this a chance, as it is good simply as a fantasy book and has the most potential to reach beyond the otaku niche of any LN thus far published in English. By turns exciting, heartwarming, and heartbreaking, The Faraway Paladin is a book that is worth your time."

Such a wonderful book. As a martial artist and a father, I broke down crying at half a dozen points in the book. Not because it is sad -far from it- but out of the sheer beauty of a son being raised by a good father and a loving mother, and growing into a strong, good man who loves them back, and must one day tell them goodbye.
This is a powerful book to fit in such a lighthearted genre. Read it - you will not be disappointed.

The Faraway Paladin Volume 1 The Boy in the City of the Dead edition by Kanata Yanagino Kususaga Rin James Rushton Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

So, a friend of mine suggested checking out this book as a bit of an offbeat, quick reading, not-a-clone-of-Lord-of-the-Rings fantasy book. I took the suggestion, and the result was quite honestly one of the quickest, most enjoyable summer reads I've had in a long while. If you're thinking about checking this one out, bear in mind that it's a bit of a slow burn, so don't expect a hardcore adventure romp, out of the gate. You will, though, be rewarded for letting the story build.

Super enjoyable, and highly recommended!
Many of the reincarnation/teleported to another world novels (Not all, but many) end up falling into moe fanservice and/or making the protagonists into some sort of demi-god with unique skills. This is not that type of novel. The protagonist in a way can be considered blessed by the "gods" but this doesn't set him immediately above others. The only things he brings from his previous life are some memories and regrets which in turn make him do his best to not let things take the same course as in his previous life. Ultimately the protagonist is marked with a destiny that might be filled with hardships and a quest that appears too big for him. However he's ready to face the hardships as they come in a very inspiring way, showing how he has grown from the person he was before.
This is a breath of fresh air when you compare to the traditional light novel story plot. Everyone is always complaining it's always insert cute girl "A", have her meet the male protagonist, he is OP for some unexplainable reason and they live happily ever after.

To all those people here is a different story, start the book from the beginning a baby is born and we get to see why he became the man who is too strange for his own good.

Every story needs a cute girl as the center of attention that we all fight to the death for to call our wifu...WRONG no cute girls we have a mother father grandpa, and a child. This story left me with a strong impression that I needed to call my parents immediately and just apologize for every difficult time I have ever put them through.

The title of my review says it all...this will be the next big thing that no one will be able to shut up about.
This book is a great start to the series and is full of many great things. It is definitely one of the best beginnings of a series I have ever read and would very highly recommend it. It has amazing characters and amazing world building. It is exactly what you want out of a story. Though this book doesn't have a lot of action and it mostly picks up at the end the next two books in the series have a decent amount more.

As someone who has read all three currently released volumes at this moment I can say that this series does not disappoint and is a very consistent and stays great! One nice fact I would like to add is that the original web novel is rated very highly and is in the top 5 on the website it was originally written on.
One of the great things about this book is the world building that it does. Starting from birth, after remember the failure of his past life, young Will resolves to make better choices for the sake of his new family. From there he, along with us, come to naturally learn about the history of this fantasy world and how they systems in place work. It also comes of as natural for a human baby being raised by the undead while initially being scared by their appearances eventually comes to understand and accept them during the time they raise and nurture him. I can't wait to see what sort of hijinks and trials he will face on his journey.
I read many light novels for simple escapism. They are like cotton candy; sweet, simple and soon forgotten. Lately, given how similar so many of these stories are, I have had to read several pages of a sequent novel before I remember the exact story I am in. Not the issue here. This story stands out in its uniqueness and maturity. It is still a sweet light novel, but more a Napoléon pastry than sugar fluff.

I preordered the next volume the minute I finished this, and even started reading the preview chapters on the j-novel website – I am hooked.
I'll be the first to admit, I hold light novels to a lower standard than normal fiction. I have to, I tell myself, make allowances for something written originally in a serial format. Something written in another language. Something written to be casually consumed in the train. Popcorn fiction.

This novel, much more than the awful overpowered harem stuff keeps recommending to me (please stop, , please), says no. Says that I should hold fiction to a single standard, of writing, of editing, if necessary, of translating.

This novel is not just, damning with faint praise, "good for a light novel." It's just plain good.
